            The Many Benefits of Spray Polyurethane Foam Roofing Systems

SPF Roofing Systems provide many benefits to building owners. The two most prominent benefits are waterproofing/ leak prevention and insulation value. Many additional benefits also exist. 

Leak free- Roof System
SPF creates a leak free monolithic seal over your entire roof deck providing a protective roof shell. Sprayed Polyurethane Foam is applied as a liquid using plural- component spray equipment to fill cracks and crevices, it then expands approximately 30 times its original liquid volume to form a hard, closed cell monolithic roof surface.

Self-flashing
The Polyurethane Foam dries within seconds after applied to the roof surface. Its expansion results in a weather tight roofing membrane that is fully to the substrate

High insulation value/ rapid payback with energy savings
Polyurethane Foam has a history of more than 35 years as a maintainable roofing medium. Polyurethane Foam adds excellent insulation value to the structure and utility bills can reflect the difference.

Strong adhesion and wind uplift resistance
SPF adheres to just about everything so it can be installed over concrete, wood, steel, and more existing roof systems which saves on the expense of roof removal and landfill fees.

Weather resistant
Once the SPF has been applied to the proper thickness and finish specifications, a protective layer of elastomeric coating with granules is applied. This protective layer produces a durable weather resistant surface that can be walked on for normal maintenance.

Lightweight and high strength
Because of polyurethane's light weight it adds little additional weight to the structure and is often used in remedial applications. Density of SPF is important when it comes to strength and thermal resistance. Obviously, higher density means increased strength and higher R-value. Most SPF roofs have densities ranging from about 2.5 pounds per cubic foot to 3 pounds per cubic foot. Three-pound density foam has a compressive strength of about 50 psi and an R-value of 7.14 installed and 6.86 aged (these numbers may vary slightly depending on the foam manufacturer).

Lifespan
If the coating for an SPF roof is properly maintained, then an SPF roof can last a very long time. Every ten or fifteen years, depending on the type and amount of coating installed, the roof will need to be cleaned, primed, and re-coated. If this is done, then a quality SPF roof could last 50 years or longer.

Energy-star Cool Roofs Program and Benefits
Energy Star qualified roof coating products reduce the amount of air conditioning needed in buildings, and can reduce energy bills by up to 50%. The Cool Roof Program defines certain standards for reflectivity, and maintenance of reflectivity, in roof coating systems. These light colored roof coating reflect the suns heat and UV rays and often lower the temperature of the roof by up to 100 degrees.

California 's Title 24
On October 5th 2005, California roofing requirements changed. The updated building energy code requires a cool roof with a minimum Solar Reflectance of 0.70 and Thermal Emittance of 0.75 for many low-slope roof applications. Using a Polyurethane Foam Roof is a simple, cost-effective way of meeting Title 24 construction requirements.

Energy Efficiency

 

  • Polyurethane foams have one of the highest insulating R-values per inch of all the available products on the market today. With typical values ranging from 3.5 to 6.7 per inch, it is possible to maximize efficiency, increase space utilization and reduce operating costs, while having thinner walls and a lower profile roofs.
  • Studies show that increasing the thickness of your roof insulation 1" or more above the ASHRAE required thickness significantly reduces your energy costs.
  • SPF sealants that are applied to cracks around window frames expand to fill energy-wasting (escaping) gaps around the window, which increases your buildings energy efficiency.
  • Energy studies performed by Texas A & M on their own roofs show the energy cost reduction obtained by applying SPF to more than 8 million square feet of roofing paid for the cost of the retrofit in a little over three years.
  • Cool roofs (using reflective plastic coverings over SPF insulated roofs) bounce sunlight and radiant heat away from a building, helping the structure stay cool and reducing energy use for cooling.
